Concscious Communicator Power Word #47 – INDEPENDENT

To honor the July 4th Independence Day holiday (when this word was first released) in the United States, this week’s first Power Word is Independent!

This is an important word for business leaders because everyone working for them is an Independent human being. Too many businesses fail to recognize this and instead treat most employees as indentured servants.

In his 2010 book, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, Daniel Pink identified autonomy as one of 3 key drivers of employee motivation. Autonomy is a synonym for Independent.

Employees treated with respect and offered an autonomous, Independent work environment with clear performance expectations, are more motivated and productive.

In 1776 the founders of the United States of America recognized Independence to be the natural state of human existence.

Business leaders who recognize, honor and implement more Independent work environments will be the workplaces of choice in the 21st Century.
